Get to Know the Artist

Miguel Otálora is a Colombian-Canadian animator, illustrator, and artist based in Vancouver. Renowned for his vibrant, culturally inspired visual storytelling, he explores the textures and symbolism of Latin American handcraft traditions with a modern pop aesthetic.

As an illustrator, Miguel has worked with prominent Colombian publications, including Revista CucúRevista BacánikaRevista Cartel Urbano, and Revista El Malpensante. His work has been recognized with awards like the I Illustration Contest El Retiro (2012) and the II Bogotá Poster International Biennale (2005). He has also made his mark as a muralist at the Vancouver Mural Festival in both 2022 and 2024, where he celebrated Latin American iconography and cultural motifs.

In graphic design, he is known for creating the iconic image for the XIV Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogotá (2012) and won the “Visual Identity” Lápiz de Acero award (2011) for his work on the festival’s 2009 edition honoring theater legend Fanny Mickey.

As an animator and filmmaker, Miguel directed the acclaimed documentary series Las Crónicas Elefantiles (Colombia, RTVC), which won numerous awards, including the India Catalina Award for Best Animation Production (2019) and the Ánima Latina Award for Best Latin American Production for Children (2019). His recent short film, One Serving per Can (2022), has gathered over 50 official selections and awards on the international festival circuit.

In Canada, Miguel has worked on high-profile series, including Rick and Morty (Adult Swim) and Solar Opposites (Hulu). He currently serves as an animation director at Bardel Entertainment for an upcoming animated series.
